The Best Apocalyptic Movies to Watch (During Quarantine)

ocean under sunset
The set before the dawn.

Hey, it doesn’t only have to be a zombie movie, and the fun doesn’t actually have to end there. I just thought I’d have a little fun making a small list of apocalyptic movies in light of the current crisis and lockdown. Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean it’s over for you — you’ll be fine, trust me. You’ll get out alive, but only for a little while. If you’re not into watching this kind of stuff right now, I understand. I may or may not be talking with you considering this. I’ll list below 11 great apocalypse movies you can feast your eyes upon while sitting on your butt with nothing to do. I’d like to list some of the best apocalyptic films to watch during quarantine.

A bunker seems to always come in handy during some apocalyptic scenarios.

These are in no real particular order in any way, and it doesn’t have to necessarily have to be an “apocalypse” or post apocalyptic movie. It may only be an implied dystopian scenario that serves as a function for the protagonist during the film. Hey, it may even simply imply a disaster or apocalypse. The idea is that it’s apocalypse like, and it’s apocalypse no matter what! If anything it’s here to help you along with what you’re probably doing, and it’s otherwise just for fun. Regardless, join me during the apocalypse!

Man, this plane had a nice cargo! What a waste in a wasteland.

How many kinds spoilers are there?

I do not own any of the rights to any of the movies or movie titles listed below! Also, you don’t need to worry about spoilers, as I don’t mention any crucial plot points or details.

Apocalyptic Films to Watch During Quarantine: Mad Max (franchise)

She seems suitable as a female companion, doesn’t she?

Since many of these are in no particular order, why not begin with the Mel Gibson classic itself. Mad Max is a post-apocalyptic dystopian action thriller franchise directed by George Miller and released in 1979 to stellar reviews. The films takes place in dystopian Australia, and it follows anti-hero Max Rockatansky. Max is a member of the Main Force Patrol (MFP) as he begins his journey.

Let’s just say that I can enjoy feeding the hysteria of fear. Are you mad, Max?

The first film sees Max’s retribution of his family. By the end, Max has seen himself go through think and thin in the wasteland to survive. There are 4 films so far in the franchise, the latest seeing Tom Hardy take over as Max in the 2015 Mad Max. The film series is a good marathon run and way to get your apocalypse appetite going.

28 Days Later (franchise)

Damn tree huggers! You can’t love or hate them, darnit!

Since many of you are already watching movies like this and this being for fun, why not scratch that zombie itch you may have been having. The post-apocalyptic horror 28 Days Later franchise won’t disappoint. Released in 2002, the first film was released to positive reviews. It was directed by Danny Boyle and stars Cillian Murphy, Naomi Harris, and Brendan Gleeson.

Yeah, I don’t think releasing anything positive is always good in a zombie outbreak!

Amidst a zombie outbreak, the world seems in ruin except for the story of four survivors in England. The film gets ugly by the end, but not to say that it can’t get better. The second film released in 2007, 28 Weeks Later shares a similar response, albeit slightly less favorable. It continues the story with a different group of characters surrounding the creation of a safe zone in London, England.

Apocalyptic Films to Watch During Quarantine: Children Of Men

Yeah, I agree! It’s a nice fire. Make sure to pack on a little more junk in the trunk.

Children Of Men is a 2006 dystopian action thriller film released to critical acclaim. The premise of the film follows Theo Faron (Clive Owen), an ex-activist and cynical bureaucrat, in a world of societal collapse in 2027 because of two decades of human infertility. The film also directed by Alfonso Juaron and stars Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, and Michael Caine.

What’s with all of the cryptic, awe-inspiring movie titles these days?

Throughout the film, you begin seeing the last form of functional government oppress refugees via harsh immigration law. The film also grapples with themes of hope, faith and religion. Theo is aided throughout the film by a group of people who end up helping him find his way. The group, with the help of Theo, is there to help a refugee escape the chaos in hopes of setting themselves free.

Shaun Of The Dead/The World’s End (Trilogy)

How you doin’, beautiful?

This being one of my favorite zombie films, Shaun Of The Dead was released in 2004 to rave reviews. The film stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman. It’s the first film directed by Edgar Wright in the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. The other two films being just as good, Shaun Of The Dead nailed the zombie apocalypse and started it out right.

I can see exactly what they did there. Where? You know where. You don’t? Are you kidding me?

The film follows Shaun and his group of friends as they find themselves in a set of precarious situations following a worldwide zombie outbreak. Does this sound familiar? It’s what you do with it that counts, and regardless, it’s certainly entertaining nonetheless. The other two movies following this are fantastic as well, including the last film The World’s End being another apocalyptic science fiction comedy film. The premise involves a group of friend’s discovering an alien invasion while reliving their past via epic pub crawl in their hometown.

Apocalyptic Films to Watch During Quarantine: Snowpiercer

Well, ain’t civilization just so useful.

Snowpiercer is a 2013 post-apocalyptic science fiction action film. Directed by Bong Joon-ho, the movie was released to critical acclaim. The film takes place on a snowpiercer train after humanity has been destroyed by climate change.

So, we’re in The Hunger Games?

The setting sees a group of slaved passengers aboard a train containing the last of humanity before and following a revolt. Throughout the film, the slaves on the train fight their way to the front to gain control, freedom and understanding. The film stars Chris Evans, John Hurt, and Tilda Swinton among many others.

This Is The End

I decided to leave them on just in case I needed to use them later. Don’t ask!

If you’re looking for a bit of a laugh, then check out apocalyptic comedy This Is The End. It was directed by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg and came out in 2013 to positive reviews. The film follows a group of celebrity friends playing their real world doubles as a real fictional apocalypse begins. The film stars an all-star, ensemble cast including Seth Rogan, James Franco and Jonah Hill to name a few.

This isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning of the end!

The film follows them through their mishaps and grievances dealing with each other in attempting to survive the end of the world. Many of the characters in the film are exaggerated forms of their real world selves, and serve to function how they would act in an “actual” movie. The movie comes with some funny twists, so make sure you’re paying attention during this comedic adventure!

Apocalyptic Films To Watch During Quarantine: Zombieland

Even the zombies are wearing masks. Damn!

Zombieland is a 2009 post-apocalyptic zombie film released to great reviews among critics. The movie stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as the four protagonists. The film follows a group of ragtags who end up together after a zombie apocalypse has ravaged the earth.

This theme park sounds exhilarating to say the least. Where do we get in line?

The film sees the group of “nameless” strangers going from place to place in the Southwestern United States. The group in in desperate search for a sanctuary free from the zombie outbreak. If you want your zombie outbreak with a list of rules and a subtle laugh, check out this film for those undead laden giggles.

Night Of The Living Dead (franchise)

Thank goodness, now my eye is healed! Yeah? Yeah, just leave it in there.

The original Night Of The Living Dead was released in 1968 to critical acclaim and worldwide praise. The film eventually turned into a series and franchise once the sequel or second film was released a decade later. Starring numerous actors and spanning decades, the six movies so far released were all directed by George A. Romero.

Eating brains never sounded so good!

The first film stories seven people who are trapped in rural farmhouse in western Pennsylvania under siege by undead corpses. The later, successive films chronicle more of the broad apocalypse surrounding the original story and concept. Spanning from 1968 to 2009, the later films exist to extend the universe for a broader understanding of the zombie theme.

Apocalyptic Films to Watch During Quarantine: Dr. Strangelove

NUCLEAR!

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a 1964 black comedy film directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film is well known, and has been renowned and praised by critics for decades. The film serves as a Cold War satire that takes a look at the absurdity of conflict through an exaggerated point of view.

That is a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very long title? How come?

The plot follows an unhinged United States Air Force general who orders a first strike nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. It separately follows the President of the United States and staff in attempt to stop him from causing nuclear holocaust. Lead Peter Sellers takes role of the three protagonists to solidify the comedic elements of the movie. If you haven’t heard of this film, you’ve literally been in quarantine a little too deep for a little too long.

Wall-E

Aw, look at those poor little puppy dog eyes just drooping.

Wall-E is a 2008 animated science fiction Pixar film that serves as a nice, lighthearted alternative to the typical apocalyptic film. Like many Pixar films, Wall-E received critical acclaim upon release. While it’s not quite an apocalyptic movie, it sees earth turned into a vast wasteland full of trash and desolation.

I suppose Adam and EVE took on a whole new meaning!

WallE, a trash cleaning robot, treks from earth and goes on an adventure to search for traces of humanity. On the way, he makes friends and enemies, before he finds whats left of human life on a ship. I included this film because, as I said, it changes the pace. While it’s not your typical apocalypse film, it certainly shares it’s personality anyway. It serves to show that Earth doesn’t need billions of humans anyway.

Apocalyptic Films to Watch During Quarantine: A Quiet Place (franchise)

Isn’t desolation simply awe inspiring.

A Quiet Place is a post-apocalyptic science fiction horror film that came out in 2018 to loud reviews and a positive response. The film is directed by John Krasinski, and stars John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. The film follows a family whose earth was invaded recently by blind creatures that are highly sensitive to sound.

This place is so dang Quie… .

If anything can be gained from the film, it’s to not have children, especially while killer beasts roam the world. The family in question are highly aware of this, and serves as the central plot theme and narrative. Throughout the film, they seek to protect themselves by being as quiet as possible in hopes of surviving in an abandoned farmhouse.

The beauty of fog is that others can’t see you die in it.

Since there are plenty of movies to catch up with, it wouldn’t be a bad time to get started. It doesn’t only have to be apocalypse related, but anything really, and you still have the time on hand. I’m sure many of you have, and since it’s never too late for an apocalyptic adventure, have at it. If you’re trying to avoid it, it’s fine, and it’s just for fun, but it may be of some interest to you. This is here for those interested, so be sure to leave some feedback and let me know what you’ve seen!

I can’t wait to show off my great power and apoca-lisp!

Well, ain’t that just a convenience store.
