Social media has been a major part of our lives since the dawn of MySpace, and now almost everyone is connected. Funny thing is, is that you probably already are on one; it’s probably how you’re seeing my article. If you already know, I’d just thought I’d give you my take. Below will the most relevant social media sites. These are the 10 most popular social media websites online today.

My opinion may not be unique, but if you’re not aware of the following sites, my opinion may help. These listed below will generally give you the most popular consensus on the top tier social sites people use. At the very least, you’ll learn a little history as to the platforms used online. Maybe you’ll learn about a new site from this list, and maybe you won’t. Below I’m going to list the top 7 most relevant social media sites online. The following is listed from the lowest to highest traffic (at least in my opinion) and in respective popularity overall.
Snapchat (The Most Popular Social Media Websites)

Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app developed by Snap, Inc in 2011. Snapchat was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, former students at Stanford University. One of the principal features of Snapchat is that pictures and messages are usually only available for a short time before they become inaccessible to their recipients. The app has evolved from originally focusing on person-to-person photo sharing to presently featuring users’ “Stories” of 24 hours of chronological content. All of this, along with “Discover,” letting brands show ad-supported short-form content.

It also allows users to keep photos in the “my eyes only,” which lets them keep their photos in a password-protected space. It’s mainly a picture site where people share stories through boards and pins they choose to display on their site. The site is designed to enable saving and discovery of information (specifically “ideas) on the World Wide Web (WWW) using images and, on a smaller scale, GIFs and videos in the form of pin boards.

You can create an ad space and do so to share a site or business page. The site was created by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp, and it had 300 million monthly active users as of August 2019. While not the most popular website, it is certainly up there. If you’re highly interested in creating pictures and boards, this website is for you.
Tumblr (The Most Popular Social Media Websites)

Tumblr is an online micro-blogging and social networking website founded by David Karp in 2007 and currently owned by Automattic. The service allows users to multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. If a user so decides, they can follow another person’s blog to get updates sent to the their feed. Not only this, you can choose to make your blogs private.

Think of this site kind of like Twitter, but more so as a blog sharing site. For bloggers many of the website’s features are accessed from a “dashboard” interface. As of August 12, 2019, Tumblr hosts over 475 million blogs and receives over 500 million monthly visitors. Although more popular amongst the European populations, WhatsApp still plays a particularly big roll in America. It’s a texting and sharing app that adds privacy to your interaction. It allows users to send text and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, user locations, and other media.

WhatsApp’s client application runs on mobile devices, but is also accessible from desktop computers. This is so as long as the user’s mobile device remains connected online while they use the desktop app. The app has been the most widely used app since 2015, and has over 2 billion users worldwide. While it’s an app more so than a social media site, it’s a social media app. You can connect free to anyone in the world, so if you’re interested in that encrypted fun, get it.

Launched in May 2003, it is mainly used for professional networking, including employers posting jobs and job seekers posting their curriculum vitae. As of 2015, most of the company’s revenue came from selling information about its members to recruiters and sales professionals. Since 2016, it’s been wholly owned by Microsoft and its subsidiaries.

The site has users interact and post messages called “tweets.” Registered users can post, like and retweet tweets. If you’re not registered, you can only view these tweets. This site is typically held along side any of the other sites. On Twitter, you’re typically on there to share your latest thoughts or news.

Users can browse other users’ content by tags, locations and view trending content. Users can like photos and follow other users to add their content to a feed.

After its launch in 2010, Instagram rapidly gained popularity. With one million registered users in two months, 10 million in a year, and 1 billion as of May 2019, it’s popular. Reddit is an online social news aggregation website. While that doesn’t sound like a social media website, it’s close enough. The site was founded by University of Virginia students Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. Much of the news you see on other sites, along with the plethora of forums you see online come(s) from Reddit.

Registered members submit content to the site, e.g., links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down by other members. Posts are organized by subject into user-created boards called “subreddits.” These typically cover a variety of topics such as news, politics, science, movies, video games, music and more. The only thing is, is that you should watch out for the trolls on here, because they are rampant. Be careful, but don’t fret, if you want a cool place to find and share news, come here.

Facebook is the largest social media and networking site on the internet, and it has been since 2008. The platform was created in 2004 by five Harvard University dropouts, including Mark Zuckerberg. The site has been prone to criticism for having made constant changes over time without warning. The site is the prototypical social media site, i.e., others have tried to follow in it’s footsteps. You can add friends, post content, create business pages, like and comment on posts, share content and more.

If you don’t know about Facebook, you’ve been living under a rock. While the site has been known, along with Google, to infringe on users’ privacy, it has been a vocal free-speech proponent. Facebook claimed that it had more than 2.3 billion monthly active users as of December 2018. It’s still the king, but we’ll have to wait and see how long it lasts. If you want to create a business or just join up with family or friends, this is the website for you, maybe… .

While YouTube is barely considered a social media site, the site does host networking type policies. The site was created in 2005 by three former PayPal employees. This site allows users to upload, view, rate, share, add to playlists, report, comment on videos, and subscribe to other channels. The site has implemented more social networking style features, e.g, stories and so on, especially recently.

If you’re looking to make money, YouTube will use Google Adsense to run ads or sponsor on your uploaded videos. The site is owned by Google, but the video streaming and online video-sharing platform is free. Although they do have premium services, even the corporate uploads do little to interfere with privacy.
