Not everyone is used to taking a medication. Not everyone is used to understanding how medications work. A medication is something that is supposed to help you because you are sick. Be it a cold, fever or mental disorder, a medication should at least try to set you straight. However, I am sure it is known that any medication can have it’s downsides. Some of them only have downsides, and those downsides can be really bad. The Question here is: Why do some many doctors prescribe them? While they may come in handy in times of need, it doesn’t mean they aren’t harmful. It is on the individual to not abuse the drugs. I have an answer, but that’s besides the point. Here’s my list of the 10 amazing medications that will not help you.
The 10 Amazing Medications That Will Not Help You
1. Alcohol
You see, alcohol is often seen as man’s best friend, but that is the catch. It’s a central nervous system depressant and poison. Alcohol is often considered a social lubricant because of it’s ability to lower inhibitions. If you are thinking that alcohol will help you, you are sorely mistaken. The catch here is obvious, and that is that alcohol is often seen as a drug that only does harm, but it can also be seen as a medication. Alcohol has often been seen as a medicine, especially in the past. Not only is it highly addictive, even in taken in moderation, the cons are not worth the so-called pros, especially the con of delirium tremens. This is only one reason why alcohol is a bad medinine.
—
This theory has been posed by various people, including your next door neighbor who can’t get their crap together. There’s an idea that alcohol will prevent you from having dementia if you drink it, but that’s a myth that has been debunked. The one drink a day in moderation tale has left the building. Alcohol will do little to serve you well, considering alcoholism is one of the leading causes of death on earth. Some of the side effects include cancer, liver damage, suicide, heart disease and more, especially if abused. Also, did you realize that some folks back in the day thought that nicotine and cigarettes too were usefully beneficial to health? Yeah, sure thing.
2. Acetaminophen (Tylenol and Cough Syrups)
Acetaminophen, also know by it’s generic name Tylenol, is known to be the troubled son of pain relievers. If you take it with cough syrup, you’ll end up causing severe brain and liver damage. You don’t even need to take it in large doses, cough syrup or not. The reason why it’s so dangerous is because of it’s addictive potential. It also has the potential for nasty side effects and death, even unintentional ones. Not only will it do little to relieve your pain, it can cause long term physiological and psychological ramifications to your health. This is only the tip of the iceberg. If you are looking for a dissociative experience, I think anyone would enjoy the versions of cough syrup without acetaminophen.

3. Benadryl
Benadryl is another one of those pain relieving drugs that made this list because of just how awful some of the side effects are. Here lies the fact that Benadryl is also an antihistamine, but it’s negatives seem to outweigh the good. If you check out any drug forum online, you will hear horror stories about salvia-like psychosis caused by Benadryl. While this comes down to personal irresponsibility, it can still affect others. It also has a long list of negative side effects, including rash, itching, seizures, mood changes and confusion, among many others. While I have not partaken in this drug myself, it’s easy to see why it can be harmful, especially if used irresponsibly.
4. Antidepressants
Oh, you thought those antidepressants were supposed to help you, huh? Well, if you did not know, anti-depressants are known to be one of the leading causes of death among those taking the drugs for depression, OCD and other mood disorders to begin with. Antidepressants can cause premature death and cardiovascular problems.
—
Along with a litany of adverse side effects, antidepressants are simply not worth it unless absolutely necessary. If you’re being prescribed these drugs, be sure you have a problem severe enough to have to take them to begin with, otherwise, many leading doctors may think that you are screwed. It is not only my opinion that doctors are handing out drugs like candy nowadays.

5. Stimulants (Ritalin, Vyvanse, and Adderall)
I cannot speak for everyone, but I think most people have heard of this next drug on this list. Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant that increases the release of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter, chemical and hormone mainly involved with feelings of reward, pleasure and motivation. While we are on the subject of stimulants, why not mention this next drug. Ritalin, like Adderall, is a central nervous system stimulant that arguably has a worse reputation than Adderall. Both of these drugs are stimulants because of their promotion of dopamine throughout the central nervous system.
—
Unless you are ADD, ADHD, or are looking to enjoy an evening of excessive masturbation, these drugs should be avoided. In high doses especially, the adverse side effects can be overwhelming. You can be dealing with excessive heart rate and blood pressure, nervousness, anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc. In severe cases, especially mixed with other stimulants, these drugs can become fatal. Someone can become dehydrated, and even experience symptoms of heart attack, stroke, or cardiac arrest. The comedowns are even worse, and they can leave you depressed, paranoid and anxious for days.
6. Cannabis
Okay, I get it, you like weed. Right now, it is being used medically by those in need. It is known to help with all sorts of issues, including cancer, glaucoma and anxiety. It is even been legalized in a few countries worldwide. Imagine that, huh? While I do think that it is often praised too much for it’s psychoactive effects, it can be useful, at least in small doses. I also believe that it’s been awfully persecuted as too harmful a drug.

Of course, the devil’s lettuce has plenty of upsides, but what about the hell it can create? Those struggling with addiction can still find marijuana psychologically addictive. It can also cause teens who start early to have developmental issues. Even if you think it’s safe to take the ganja, realize that it can cause withdrawal symptoms. If you cease to use cannabis, you can suffer from short-term memory loss, anxiety and more. Pot has also been known to cause schizophrenia and anxiety in those predisposed to the psychiatric disorders.

7. MDMA
MDMA, also known as Ecstasy, is a drug that is currently going through medical trials right now to treat PTSD and depression (Link 8). While most of you may know MDMA as a recreational drug, it may soon turn into more than that. Ecstasy allows your body to release an ungodly amount of the neurotransmitter and hormone serotonin into your system. If you want to get your rocks off by depleting your ability to produce serotonin, have at it, hoss. This will in turn cause a comedown and crash, which can cause acute anxiety, hypertension, and depression for days afterwards.
—
Of course, this isn’t to say that in a medically induced state under the watchful eyes of a therapist it couldn’t be beneficial. It can be, just understand that this party drug gone pharmaceutical can be dangerous to mental and neurological health. If taken in too large a dose or mixed with an SSRI, you could end up with serotonin syndrome. The point is to not take this drug with anything else that may increase your serotonin levels. Even if it takes nearly 5 grams to overdose, it doesn’t mean something else can’t end up hurting you along the way.
8. Psychedelics (Mushrooms, LSD, Mescaline, DMT)
Okay, so you all have probably heard about the negative impact psychedelics can have on your mental health. If not, then please refrain from taking them until you find out more. Psychedelics can certainly be a fun ride for recreation, and they can help you get through some mental obstructions. Although, if you are looking to accomplish anything from a psychedelic, you may end up having to have a “challenging trip.” You must first have a problem to overcome before a psychedelic has any use beyond pretty colors, good sex, love talk, and delusions of infinite worlds. Hey, they’re even, like MDMA, looking to legalize them for medical use.
—
The problem is if you are looking for a good time, you may end up walking out with PTSD, depression, severe anxiety, or schizophrenia if predisposed to them. Will you end up going back after that just to fix what you have started? Not to mention the fact that you may not even be getting the psychedelic you think you are getting. Microdosing in a professional setting has been considered, but they are still in trial runs. While they may not be considered toxic by professionals, there are still plenty of things to consider before taking a psychedelic. It is not all sunshine and rainbows, so be sure to tread lightly before taking something as terrifying as a psychedelic can be, epiphany or not.

9. Prescription Opioid Painkillers (Hydrocodone and Oxycontin)
Prescription opioid painkillers have often been the source of many back page news stories involving someone overdosing. They may have ended up doctor shopping for pain relief because they wanted to commit suicide or get their knocks off. Drugs like Hydrocodone and Oxycontin have a pretty nasty reputation because of their ties to heroin, too.
—
Not only do these drugs cause nasty side effects during use, they also have horrible addictive potential and withdrawal. They are also very easy to overdose on if unaware of dosing. If someone has been taking these drugs in high doses for a long time, they can expect a nightmarish experience coming down. Those struggling with addiction can even die from the withdrawal in severe cases.
10 Benzodiazepines (Xanax and Ativan)
Benzodiazepines are a type of medicine known as tranquilizers. Not necessarily the horse tranquilizers you are used to hearing about, but close enough. They are supposed to help you with anxiety, but they sure as hell can start it, too. If you need to take something for overwhelming anxiety, then benzos may come in handy. However, I would typically recommend someone give natural remedies a go before going down this dark encrusted path. Alternatives such as kratom are acceptable, as long as people don’t overdo it.
—
Medical benzodiazepines like Xanex and Ativan are not only highly addictive, they can kill you. Withdrawals from benzos is often horrific and just as bad as delirium tremens and heroin withdrawal. You can typically expect a wide array of adverse side effects as well. They are often used recreationally, and they are commonly mixed with other anxiolytics like alochol. This combination is horrible because of the blackout potential it has, as well as it’s negative health consequences.
Extra: Antipsychotics (Ability, Geodon, etcetera)
Antipsychotic medications will always be useful for those struggling with severe schizophrenia, bipolar and major depression. If you do not need them, that’s a different story. Even those struggling with severe psychosis will find these drugs difficult to deal with. Psychotic medications are even taken as recreational drugs by the crazy ones. They also have a long list of side effects, even more so than an antidepressant. Adverse effects can include excessive sedation, hypotension, tardive dyskinesia, sexual dysfunction, cardiac arrhythmia, and more.
Final Thoughts: The 10 Amazing Medications That Will Not Help You
These are the 10 amazing medicines that will not help you. Even though they are an amazing accomplishment of science does not mean that they do not have their downsides. Be sure you are aware of the side effects of each of these before you take them. A comprehensive understanding of your medical history should be required by you and your doctor. Taking them recreational is always not recommended, and even if a doctor gives prescribes them, you should be wary.
