The 5 Most Overrated Music Acts of All Time
I’ve been plastered into history … .

Most people tend to lack context when it comes to “their own” personal tastes in music. However, it’s not always that simple when it comes to their so-called “favorite” bands; it comes down to music groups! And, at least if we’re being somewhat honest, we ‘should’ understand that people tend to have a personal bias for something specific that relates to their “desires” & “upbringing.” (This is obviously personal opinion and somewhat cliched, but people tend to go with the so-called herd.) Unfortunately, it’s typically ‘so difficult’ to understand and/or relate to people and their music, especially if you can not relate to it yourself. (And it’s obviously the worst thing ever!) Of course, we can integrate ourselves into enjoying and listening to other kinds of music; however, this comes with a plethora of caveats, too. Although, in the end, we should try to understand people’s tastes, even though they’re not the most consistent. And this is up to us, too. But know that some music is “special”; these are the 5 most overrated music acts of all time.

Being famous is always about your inevitable “luck,” be it being in the right place at the right time or your connections. (They are pretty much one and the same.) Many of these bands did deserve their fettered or worldwide fame, but they also don’t deserve it more than their contemporaries or other acts. At the same time, some famous bands certainly do not deserve their fame, at least when it comes to certain criteria; however, this doesn’t matter to the “record labels” who saw something that would likely be profitable. Now, do people recognize this? Well, they can, do, and should, but it’s more than just about that when it comes to people singing their praises for what is already a part of the status quo. So, there is little that we can actually do except to accept that scenes are often what makes a band “good”!

5. Nirvana

Nirvana is known for “ending” hair metal/glam rock and their amateur luck and bravado. It’s also their grunge style, trashy instrumentality, and simple yet contradictory lyrics that helped soared them towards the top. Of course, Kurt Cobain’s so-called suicide is what made Nirvana, as a brand, stand the test of time. But it should also be stated that they sold over 80 million records worldwide! But other than the “designer” torn jeans, rips, and the grunge (Seattle) scene label, Nirvana’s special “Nevermind” album was the only thing that gave them any staying power after what they were able to accomplish. Although, out of all of the bands, at least in my opinion, they deserve the fame and aren’t too overrated.

While you’re sitting around and listening to the “latest and greatest” rap album by the same old hip-hop artist, you’re also likely ignoring the better music …! (These overrated bands are generally better than some of the worst genres of music.) And the MOST overrated band of all time is obviously Nirvana — it’s a paradigm within our modern zeitgeist at this point! Of course, you could be listening to a sh*tty DJ playing the same song with the same crappy lyrics; however, why bother!? And, although it doesn’t mean much. They’re at the bottom of the list simply because the mystique surrounding the band has made them somewhat invulnerable to the critiques of other ‘folks’. (The diehard fans still exist, but they’re never listening to Nirvana.) You’ve got your simpleminded lyrics and musical scholars trying to interpret the shallow meaning of their so-called lyrics as well. Thankfully, there’s also room to wear your Nirvana T-shirt out in public to prove how trendy you are. But, in the end, Nirvana is simply a nostalgic symbol of the 90s!

4. The Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead is and was known for their Deadhead fans & being the biggest, luckiest jam band of all time! And it should also be stated that they sold well over 40 million albums worldwide. (Fame is more than just the numbers.) Although, in spite of their comparatively “modest” amount of albums sold, they were famous worldwide. Did they even deserve this? Well, that’s up for you to decide, but this didn’t stop them from dominating, especially during the psychedelic scene in the late 60s and and 70s.

The world is full of crappy jam bands; however, the biggest, most famous “jam” band of them all is called the Grateful Dead. Did they deserve their fame? Well, probably no more than anyone else in San Francisco at the time; they’re the silliest worst band of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. It’s very likely that you’re also a Deadhead who got enticed by the psychedelia of the time. Except by their worst fans, they seemed to be a relatively average jam band, at least for the most part. Of course, you can see it differently, or you fall for or into the hype. Just be sure to understand that their fame simply came from their luck & location. Just be sure to understand that I’m not insulting the band, but I am also mentioning them for a reason … .

In other words, they are “above average” and lucky to boot. And you can like them or not, but there is no denying their place in music culture. Just know that the more that you “dislike” them, the more that you will … likely suffer. Now, this works for their fanbase, including the Grateful Dead and their music. Not only this, but they are all bearded middle-aged men! (The Grateful Dead are known for this.) Now, this “can” be “good,” be it superficial or just interesting. However, it’s not so simple! (Be it good or bad, you can find ways to make your scene work out!) And if you find this to be a problem, then you are likely the problem to the people listening to them. Again, they are not that bad; however, they’re just that lucky jam band … .

3. Queen

There’s not much to say about Queen except for Freddie Mercury being a “homosexual” and good singer and Brain May being a somewhat decent guitarist and “physicist.” (It doesn’t make much of a difference.) The other two guys in the band are barely ever mentioned, so why even bother with that!? Or you can mention them, even though they’re not worth it. So, does it make a difference?

Although the band Queen is known for its interesting “characters” and ‘melodies,’ there’s not much to say for or about them beyond their powerfully overrated anthems. So, the general themes of their music surround the subjects of motivation and inspiration; however, it’s not like there’s any complexity to them. Yes, intrigue comes in many forms; the point is that not many people would believe this. Of course, the band is not objectively bad, but they’re certainly “overrated” when most of their songs are not even what “hardcore fans” of the band would necessarily listen to. Now, our culture typically “demands” that we listen to facile and uninteresting music (e.g., skip-hop [rap], country, and pop) You can do something else, as it proves that its all about style over substance. And Queen is known for this! But other than Freddie Mercury displaying his tiny bulge and huge teeth on a regular basis, there is not much else to mention! But there is something to say about karaoke at the club down the street & their 300 million albums sold!

2. Elvis (Michael Jackson)

You can not deny Michael Jackson and someone like Elvis because of their “place” in music culture. Of course, it was a different time and scene; however, they’re still a part of pop culture. Did they deserve it? Well, they probably didn’t, even then … . But this doesn’t change the fact that the landscape has been sculpted by them, especially since they were luckily chosen by the record labels to be money-making machines who both sold nearly 500 million albums a piece. Just know that this could be exaggerated …!

When worse comes to worst, there are plenty of ways to see the world and its silly people! (This obviously covers the music as well.) “What does this really mean?” you curiously ask. Well, it means — for most people — that Michael Jackson is considered some kind of great artist. Unfortunately, the only thing that he was known for was his style, i.e., the moonwalk and “playing” with little boys. (He wasn’t even a musician or actual songwriter, but he does deserve to be on this list anyway.) You can (for the most part) enjoy this kind of music if you’re just looking for a groovy singer. (Of course you may, in spite of the problems!) Despite this, you can always find room to let go. And thanks to our ingratiation, we can always find simply ways to get in on the latest trends of the average humans. It’s just too bad that it works this …!

Of course, we cannot forget about Elvis Presley and the cultural impact that he had. (He was a sex symbol, singer, and “cultural phenomenon.”) But we can even mention people like Elton John and David Bowie, who got famous because of their flamboyant stage productions and silly sexuality scandals. Yes, there are plenty of things to consider: pop culture, sex appeal, etcetera. And it’s because of this that you find it “interesting.” Now, you can fall for the “hype” because of its place in pop culture, but did they deserve it!? Unfortunately, deserve has little to do with it, and it shows that it’s highly subjective to most people. It works good, so why not give it a chance as well. And, at times, the best simply is not seen as great! And it should be understood that ‘record labels’ make mistakes when it comes to who they choose to represent.

The 5 Most Overrated Music Acts of All Time

1. The Beatles

The Beatles were and still are considered the biggest band of all time, at least as an entire unit. Of course, you’ve probably heard of them and a few of their (mediocre) hits. And it shouldn’t be understated that most of their music was generally more interesting back in the 60s. Now, we have got so much to listen to that their music seems almost stale in comparison; however, this does not mean that we can take their cultural impact away. It should also be stated that The Beatles have a record sale of over 600 million albums. And this does not include their “solo” careers, ads, and merchandising sales.

To whom it may concern, there’s no denying that there is room for just about any music. (You obviously saw this one coming, right?) The bigger the band, the more that they’re likely to be overrated, subjectively. However, some of the biggest bands are also the most objectively “worst” bands. Now, it’s not to say that The Beatles were bad, but their entire career was full of hits that did little to shake the zeitgeist. They were obviously followers, too! Although, the worst part is when people mention Beatlemania as a cultural phenomenon! And why is this? Well, it boils down to people using popularity to rationalize the quality of music. But why should we at all listen to what others tell us, especially with this!?

Of course, its justification comes from the cultural impact of more than just the music — this is always the case. It’s not like you have to be the biggest band of all time to be overrated, though. Even if they had moderate success, there’s room to say that they were “overrated”! It’s just the way that it is, seeing as they gained a lot of their fame and fortune from having a “particular style.” Just be sure to consider that the bigger you are, the more likely that you might (and will) find SOME amount of “complaints” from people with different tastes. However, The Beatles seemed to have overcome a lot of this problem with their undeniable charm, earnestness, and lyrical wittiness. And their so-called “simplicity” is typically said to be a good time; however, this doesn’t always apply, of course. And sometimes, this degree of “fandom” is not such a bad thing, at least for the most part. But, for what it’s worth, it works, as it made billions of $$$.

The 5 Most Overrated Music Acts of All Time

Conclusion

As you can see and tell, there’s plenty of room for humor and sarcasm! Because of this, you may find that things become difficult for “most” people. Except for the difficult parts, it is fun to make a divisive list, even though it is not a worthy mention to most people. Just understand that a “wise” musician once said, “There’s no such thing as overrated without some truth to it.” And there are obviously a lot of bands that can be considered overrated, and the list never ends. Just about every band has its haters, and the ‘bands’ have their so-called good and bad sides. After all, no one is “perfect.” But this does not change that much.

So, we should always include our reasons for disliking a music act, right!? And why not have some cool reasons: instrumentality, melody, and their voice including. People create the hype, but they also fall for it, too. It’s obviously what people wanted and would make money, as it serves the lowest common denominator; it’s also a matter of opinion. “Why not understand this!” But it’s the worst horrible thing … . I can even mention musical “acts” like “The Rolling Stones,” “Jimi Hendrix,” and “Kanye West.” (And I believe that they all suck!) As a matter of fact, they’re all completely overrated because they were simply at the right place at the right time. And because of this or that, they became world-famous! But it’s essentially the luck of the draw, or was it something else. Even then, it is a waste of time to think about it!

This is simply a list of something that most people could agree on, at least subjectively. You can obviously disagree, but this list is not meant to be taken too seriously. (I don’t really consider rap to be “musical” genre, especially if there are no instruments involved.) But there is typically not that much to understand, and it is easy to ‘reasonably’ judge. Of course, most people are facile, and they are unlikely to change their opinions all that much. There are obviously some really band bands that have a bad reputation, but most bands, in spite of their hardcore bases, get what they deserve. Even then, it’s not always the correct way to look at this, right? (Why can’t we do this properly!) In the end, it’s worthy of consideration, mostly.

Just like everyone else, you have an opinion (e.g., the good, bad, and ‘ugly’). Of course, there are plenty of other bands that could be included here. (So, what’s the point, though!) Perchance it will change! And not everything has to be a band, as Michael Jackson wasn’t even in a real band after the Jackson 5. I could even include Johnny Cash and a plethora of other subpar country artists on here as well, but they are not even worth considering because of their relatively small place in music. This list serves a different point entirely. And some people simply believe that anything that is not what they particularly like is overrated. Regardless, I see this as a more objective list that’s not all that interesting. In fact, you should get over it!

Honorable Mentions: (Every Single Band That Has Ever Existed), Phish, ABBA, Genesis, The Rolling Stones, “Taylor Swift,” The Beach Boys, The Monkees, Metallica, Van Halen, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Etcetera … .

People make the band, and the band makes people interested. Of course, metrics are important, but it’s aways about a little more than just understanding the psychology of other people and their tastes. Now, it’s not to say that I insult you; however, a lot of this list should be at least somewhat understandable.
